The Afforestation Grants Scheme (AGS) is a government initiative to
offset greenhouse gas emissions in New Zealand. It
is part of New Zealand's climate change policy, intended
to meet obligations to the Kyoto Protocol and other
international treaties.
The scheme provides a limited pool of funds for people to tender for, to encourage the establishment
of new forests. These funds are contestable and as such are not guarenteed.
Half the pool is distributed to Regional Councils, the other half is available
for public contest. The public fund will primarily be distributed for high
carbon sequestration species although some will be made available
for planting indigenous species.
Applications for AGS grants close on the 30th April and 31st October every year
